After having our first son in the hospital, I knew there had to be a better way! There was, and so I had our second son at home with a midwife. We weren’t hippies and we had insurance that would have paid 100% for a hospital birth, we just knew it was right for us. That experience changed my life. I could truly do whatever the Lord asked me to do after He had done that through me. I wanted to be a midwife and help other women discover what birth could and should be.
I went to nursing school and worked in ICU, Labor and Delivery, taught Childbirth Classes, and volunteered at a Pregnancy Help Center for years. I then apprenticed for 3 years with a Certified Nurse Midwife, Joyce Daniel, who had been doing homebirth for 18 years. I began my homebirth practice in 1989 and since then have become a Certified Professional Midwife. I was licensed in Texas from 1993 until now and currently work in Missouri and Kansas where licensure is unavailable. I do, however, maintain all the requirements for my CPM, including Neonatal Resuscitation Certification, CPR, continuing education hours and quarterly peer review.
I have attended over 500 births as a primary midwife and hundreds of others as secondary midwife. Having attended so many births has confirmed to me that natural birth is and should be normal, not the exception as is the case in most births in the US. This is why I offer home and birth center birth as options.
I have been married to Ted Perry since 1971. We have three sons: Travis, a Houston Firefighter and wonderful husband and father; Clayton, a graphic designer and wonderful husband and father; Aaron, a student at Forerunner School of Ministry, looking forward to being a wonderful husband and father. Our sons have added the daughters we never had: Diane and Tiffany. God has also blessed our family with two grandsons, Ethan and David and two granddaughters, Emily and Anna, all natural births. In fall ’09 we’ll see the next addition to our family! He has done so much with our so little!
